Our 2024 ASIST Scholarship Recipient - Yoema Fernandez!

A true testament to resilience and ambition, I embody the spirit of perseverance and dedication. Hailing from the vibrant streets of Brooklyn, NY I made a bold move three years ago, purchasing a new home and relocating to the serene landscapes of Clarksville, Tennessee. This significant transition marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with growth and opportunity.

Currently, on the cusp of completing a business degree, I have masterfully balanced the demands of a full-time job and the management of a thriving four-year-old natural skincare small business. This remarkable entrepreneurial journey reflects a deep commitment to health and wellness, providing customers with quality products crafted with care.

As a devoted parent to two wonderful children, a young adult and a teenager, I continuously manage to navigate through the complexities of family life with grace, even amidst the challenges of a recent divorce. The strength and love shown in supporting elderly parents through their senior years further illustrate an unwavering dedication to family and community.

Our 2023 ASIST Scholarship Recipient - Melissa Smith!

Melissa Smith Headshot

Melissa always knew she was destined for a career in healthcare.  After discovering nursing wasn’t the right path for her, she changed her undergrad degree and spent her early career in hospital executive support roles.  In 2019, Melissa lost her father and went through a difficult divorce that left her a single parent.  While she loved her job at the local hospital, those changes forced her to realize she needed more from her career.  She decided to seek and eventually accept a promotion as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Nurse at HCA Healthcare.

Melissa’s new boss saw something in her, and strongly encouraged her to consider a career in hospital executive leadership.  After mulling over that conversation, Melissa decided to take the first step and obtain her Master of Healthcare Administration from WGU.  It’s thanks to accelerating her program, taking advantage of her company’s tuition reimbursement, and a wonderful colleague nudging her to apply for the ASIST Scholarship that Melissa will graduate 10 months early and nearly debt-free.
